Body frame dimensions

Postby 70 340 » 27 Jul 2007 7:43

In my challenger we found a slight kink in the rear rail so my coach builder would like to put it on a jig and make sure the the frame dimensions are correct. In one of me books called Challenger & Barracuda restoration guide 1967-1974. I found a section with the dimensions, the challenger & the barracuda dimensions are the same. My question is where is the differance in the wheel base between the two.
Darryl.

I only just saw this post! How did I miss it? :roll:

I am pretty sure those are the Barracuda dimensions you have there. The Challenger is a couple of inches longer in the rear passenger footwell.

Here is the diagram from the workshop manual.

Actually. That is not the only difference if you look closely.

Along the bottom the measurements on that Barracuda are;

43.04 - 42.71 - 56.88. Total = 142.63

Challenger is:

44.41 - 44.71 - 56.50. Total = 145.62

Difference in the chassis points = 2.99 inches.

But having said that. I doubt that the rear or front sections were any different at all no matter what those diagrams say. they used the same front and rear suspensions so the dimensions would have to be the same. The diagrams must be wrong.

The two inches in the center section is the only difference for sure.

I'm currently putting new inner fenders on my car and almost 80% sure I need to have the frame pulled a bit. I've always known this. Will those dimension above suffice for the guy pulling the frame? Is there more detailed dimensions I should be chasing down?

I've called everywhere, no one seems to have anything. Just curious. thanks.

Those are the dimensions supplied by Chrysler in their factory workshop manual.
Because of the poor build quality of these cars you would be lucky if they all came out EXACTLY those dimensions. So don't get too hung up on getting accuracy down to +/- 1mm. :wink: :lol:
